MARY’S HOUSE

PROJECT TEAM:

  • Stan Barter - Architect & Builder

  • Jared Lewis - Structural Engineer

  • Caylin Barter - Laborer & Co-Designer

We bought Mary’s House from Mary in 2015, becoming the home’s second owners since it was built in 1954. In 2020 we started a major remodel just months before COVID torpedoed our abilities to subcontract labor and source materials. The pandemic pushed us to adapt, reuse, and self-perform. Custom cabinets and stairs were CNC’ed by a local fabricator and assembled onsite. Wood from the Vanport Flood that Mary had salvaged to line the attic floors was re-milled and used to create many of the interior doors. Concrete, regionally sourced lumber, and locally made tile were key components of the project palette.
